Leadership effectiveness in higher education is found to be different on various counts because of the structural and functional dissimilarities in the organizational processes. This necessitates the need for a leadership model that is nontraditional. The new-genre leadership theories, viz., servant, ethical and spiritual, are blended in this study to formulate a new model of leadership that can prove to be effective in higher educational settings. This blended model of leadership draws upon the characteristics of the three leadership theories, applied differentially in organizational settings. The specific applications of each of these models are also discussed.
Academic leadership is what makes an educational institution unique, and it is the leadership pattern that drives its excellence (Rowley, 1997). Being the cornerstone of academic excellence, leadership in higher education institutions is gaining greater attention these days as there are many educational institutions coming up both in the public and the private sectors. Leadership processes being common across organizations, the academic leadership is to be framed, understood, and practiced in a different way as the structure and function of colleges and universities present a different picture. This paper tries to put forward a leadership perspective integrating the three models of servant, ethical and spiritual leadership that can be practiced in higher educational institutions.
